UPDATE (3:37 p.m.) - Santa Barbara County Sheriff's deputies took a suspect into custody after a five-hour standoff.
Sheriff's officials say deputies responded to the 400 block of Ray Road west of Santa Maria at about 10:15 a.m. for a report that a man was threatening another person with a machete.
The suspect was identified as Nazario Gonzalez, 48, of Santa Maria.
Officials say that when deputies arrived, Gonzalez went into a home and refused to come out.
Nearby residents were evacuated as a precaution.
According to the sheriff's office, after attempts to negotiate Gonzalez's surrender failed, deputies deployed chemical agents and took Gonzalez into custody at about 3:20 p.m.

(1:46 p.m.) - Deputies on Tuesday were responding to reports of a barricaded person in the Santa Maria area.
The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office reports the incident is taking place along the 400 block of Ray Road.
Authorities say the person is wanted for brandishing a machete.
A few residents in the area have been evacuated from the property. Authorities say there are no road closures in place at this time.
