Bicyclist injured after suffering medical emergency

An 85-year-old bicyclist sustained major head trauma when he fell off his bike after suffering a medical emergency, according to the California Highway Patrol.

It happened at 1:30 p.m. on Monday on eastbound Highway 41 east of the Salinas River Bridge just outside of the Atascadero city limits.

The CHP says the Los Osos man was riding a BLIX electric bicycle when he suffered an unknown medical emergency and fell off his bicycle onto the paved shoulder of the highway, striking his face. He was wearing a helmet.

Officers say the man was taken to the hospital where he immediately underwent surgery. At last check, he was being treated in the ICU.
