The 'Car Guys' club of San Luis Obispo put the pedal to the metal to raise $5,000 for the SLO Food Bank.

All eight Car Guys members representing seven local businesses sold 250 T-shirts with the slogan "DRIVE SLO" during the spring and summer months at impromptu cruises in downtown San Luis Obispo, according to FarmFit SLO owner and club member Paul Schmitt.

The organization presented the $5,000 check to the food bank Saturday morning, which Schmitt said will yield 35,000 meals for local families in need.

Schmitt said the SLO Food Bank has done a phenomenal job helping out local community members who may be struggling to put a meal on the table for Thanksgiving.

"To know that we created 35,000 meals with what we've raised so far was just great," said Schmitt.

Garret Olson, CEO of the SLO Food Bank, said the timing of the fundraiser is perfect.

"Due to logistics and public health reasons, we are unable to conduct our holiday food drive programs, so we need to purchase food to make up for that loss. These guys are giving that effort a serious jump-start," said Olson.

The club has a goal of raising another $5,000 for the non-profit organization by selling an additional 250 shirts.

To order shirts from the Car Guys, send an email to DRIVESLO2020@gmail.com with how many shirts and sizes you want. Each T-shirt costs $20 and is made of 100% cotton, according to Schmitt.
