A driver is in custody after hitting several vehicles along Highway 101 in the Montecito area Monday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

It reportedly started just after 8 a.m. in the northbound lanes near Santa Monica Road.

After hitting one vehicle on the highway, CHP says the driver of a Ford truck continued on, briefly exiting at San Ysidero before re-entering and eventually stopping between San Ysidro and Olive Mill.

He hit at least six vehicles and possibly up to 10, according to CHP, who say after stopping, the driver ran away onto surface streets.

A witness was able to contact CHP and lead authorities to the alleged driver where officers say he was detained.

The extent of damage to the vehicles involved is not known at this time and officers say they have no confirmation that anyone was injured.

The name of the driver has not been released.

This is a developing story and will be updated as information becomes available.
