California Highway Patrol identified the man killed in a crash on Highway 101 in Paso Robles Thursday evening.
CHP said Peter M. Mays, 82, of San Miguel was a passenger in a Jeep Cherokee when the car was struck by a tire that had come off a separate vehicle.
Mays suffered fatal injuries as a result of the incident.
CHP said the crash remains under investigation and there are no indications that alcohol, drugs or distracted driving played a role.
