San Luis Obispo County Public Works is starting construction on a new animal services facility.
The project has been in the works for years and was originally slated to begin this summer.
The new building will replace the county's previous animal services facility, which was 43 years old.
It's being built along Highway 1 next to the Woods Humane Society on Oklahoma Avenue.
"The new facility is going to be a new 16,000 square foot facility, state of the art, that provides functions that are caring for the animals, inviting for the public. It's going to be a win-win for the community,” said Robert Ruiz, San Luis Obispo County Public Works engineer.
The project is expected to cost $20 million.
Construction will continue through to February 2022 and will open shortly after that.
