UPDATE (11 a.m.) - The California Highway Patrol says a 22-year-old man from Santa Maria was killed in a high-speed crash Wednesday night just west of the city.

Officers say the driver was headed southbound on Bonita School Road, approaching Bonita Lateral Road, when he lost control of his vehicle and struck a sign, telephone guy wires, and a chain-link fence.

CHP says the vehicle ended up on its roof with the driver-side door and roof crushed.

First responders had to use the "Jaws of Life" to remove the driver from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
