The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of an inmate after he was found unresponsive in his cell.

According to deputies, custody staff at the Santa Barbara County Main Jail conducting routine security checks discovered 30-year-old Michael Anthony Remijio unresponsive in his cell around 2:30 p.m. Friday.

Deputies said Remijio was found hanging from a bedsheet he fashioned as a ligature in an apparent suicide attempt.

Custody staff immediately started performing life-saving measures and called for jail medical staff and paramedics to respond.

Remijio was transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries approximately an hour later, according to officials.

The inmate's family has been notified of his death.

The sheriff's office is thoroughly investigating the circumstances leading up to his death even though it appears to be apparent suicide.

Remijio was booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail on 2/18/21 at 8:53 pm for a Ventura County warrant issued for failure to appear on charges of driving on a suspended license and driving under the influence.
