A dog was pulled to safety after falling off a cliff at the Santa Barbara Mesa Wednesday.

Santa Barbara City Fire says crews were dispatched to the Douglas Family Preserve around 2 p.m.

Firefighters were able to locate the dog and found it had fallen about 30-feet below.

A rope system with a special dog harness was used to help rescue the dog.

"The Santa Barbara City Fire Department would like to recognize the great restraint by the citizen in not attempting to rescue the dog. The owner called 911 and firefighters were able to safely perform the rescue," fire officials said in a press release, adding people should try to keep themselves and pets away from cliffs.

Firefighters say the dog was reunited with its owner within about 15 minutes.
