The Santa Barbara Police Department says it received a call around 12:30 p.m. Saturday, from a resident in the 300 block of Ladera Street stating they found military explosives in a storage shed.

The explosives are believed to have belonged to a deceased military veteran.

Santa Barbara Police Officers called the Santa Barbara County Bomb Squad to assess the items.

The bomb squad verified the items were live military explosive devices and resources from Vandenberg Air Force Base were called in to help "render the devices safe."

The devices were not able to be transported back to VAFB, due to their age and possible instability, according to the Santa Barbara Police Department.

Crews decided to evacuate Pershing Park to safely detonate the devices, approximately a block-and-a-half away from where the items were found.

Officials say at approximately 6:50 p.m., the crews from Vandenberg Air Force Base safely detonated the devices inside the park with the help of area police.
