Fire destroyed a home in Santa Maria Friday morning.

It broke out at around 6:45 a.m. in the 700 block of S. Lincoln Street.

When firefighters arrived, they say smoke and flames were coming out of the windows near the back of the building.

According to the Santa Maria Fire Department, other than a few items of furniture and appliances, the house appeared to be vacant.

"Aggressive fire attack and search proved that no one was in the residence and we were able to knock the fire down; however, the fire did pretty much get throughout the entire structure and the attic," said Battalion Chief Tony Clayburg, Santa Maria Fire Department.

Fire officials say the house is a total loss.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
