Patients receiving emergency care at French Hospital Medical Center in San Luis Obispo will now be treated in the newly-expanded emergency department (ED).

While the Oppenheimer Family Center for Emergency Medicine officially opened its doors last month, patients were not being treated in the new facility until Wednesday.

Hospital officials say they were waiting for final licensing and completing staff training.

The new space includes 18 private treatment rooms and three trauma rooms.

It is part one of a two-phase expansion project at the hospital.

Phase one added 8,600 square feet to the hospital and more than doubled the size of the existing ED, according to hospital officials. Phase two will add another approximately 4,000 square feet of space.

The new facility was named after Peter and Mary Beth Oppenheimer, who donated $5.5 million in 2017, funds Dignity Health says supported the “much-needed expansion.”

French Hospital Medical Center is located at 1911 Johnson Ave.
