French Hospital Medical Center in San Luis Obispo is gearing up to open its newly expanded emergency department.

The Oppenheimer Family Center for Emergency Medicine officially opens its doors this weekend.

The hospital held a ribbon cutting with the Chamber of Commerce Friday.

"This facility is more than tripling the current space we have to handle emergencies," said Matthew Scales, Medical Director for ER at French. "We're moving away from a very cramped space that is very outdated where we still provide excellent care but it's becoming more and more difficult to handle the volume of patients we're seeing."

The new ER includes 18 private treatment rooms, 3 trauma rooms, and other rooms to accommodate more patients.

"We're meeting the needs that the community has right now but the space is designed to meet the needs for the coming 20 or 30 years as the community grows. We're going to be prepared to handle the growing community, which is really exciting," Scales added.

There will be a grand opening celebration Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with tours, presentations, and health information.

It's located at 1911 Johnson Avenue.
