A GoFundMe account has been established for the family of a man who reportedly drowned a Lopez Lake over the weekend.

A family member of David G. Sanchez from Grover Beach says, "David, my brother in law lost his life doing a selfless act at the lake Sunday afternoon. I want to ask if we can come together and help with whatever you can to relieve a little bit of financial stress, as they learn to cope with the incident and heal during this tragic time."

As of early Thursday morning, $2,500 of the family's $30,000 goal had been raised.

First responders along with a San Luis Obispo County dive team were dispatched to the area of the Lake know as Lopez Arm shortly after 3:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

The Sheriff's Office said Sanchez went into the water to help a relative who appeared to be in distress. That person was able to get out of the water safely, but Sanchez went under water and did not come back up.

After a few days of searching the lake Sanchez's body was located Tuesday evening in approximately 47 feet of water.

An autopsy is planned to determine the exact manner and cause of death.
