A Guadalupe man was killed in a crash Friday on Highway 101 north of Highway 154.
The California Highway Patrol says around 7 p.m., Thomas Vernon Smith was heading northbound on the highway in the slow lane at an unknown speed when he reportedly began passing another vehicle in the fast lane that was traveling between 50-60 mph.
The vehicles sideswiped each other, causing the other driver from Oakland to spin out and hit a tree near the center divider, according to CHP.
Officers say Smith’s vehicle also spun out before going up an embankment, overturning and hitting a tree.
Life-saving measures were performed by passersby and first responders, according to CHP, but Smith, 67, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The other driver was taken by a passerby to the hospital for treatment of moderate injuries, CHP says.
Officers add that it was cloudy at the time of the crash.
