Monday was the first day of the school year for students in the Santa Maria Joint Union High School District.

Classes will be held via Zoom at least until December.

Last week, students picked up the necessary materials and resources to be able to learn from a distance.

Santa Maria High School's principal says students will be held more accountable than they were in the spring.

"Well, I think it's a stressful time to be a student or a parent or a teacher or an administrator," said Principal Steve Campbell."The routines that we have all become accustom to and we work on and under for years without thinking have all had to be reviewed and revised and revamped."

A new free and reduced meal plan is also in effect.

Meals are available at Righetti, Pioneer Valley, and Santa Maria high schools, and eight school buses will be delivering meals for pickup at other locations.
