An inmate at the United States Penitentiary in Lompoc died at the facility Tuesday, officials say.
Prison officials say staff found inmate Fermin Maldonado-Lopez unresponsive around 6:45 a.m.
Life-saving efforts were performed but the 46-year-old was pronounced dead.
The prison says the FBI was notified but adds the public was never in any danger and no other staff or inmates were injured.
Maldonado-Lopez has been in custody at the prison since Aug. 13, 2018 and was reportedly serving a 63-month-sentence out of Southern California for “Illegal Reentry and Removed Alien Found in the United States,” according to a news release.
Eight hundred and 30 inmates are currently housed at the medium-security facility in Lompoc.
Prison officials have not said what may have contributed to Maldonado-Lopez’s death.
