Officials at Calipatria State Prison are investigating the death of an inmate from Santa Barbara County.

Prison officials say Joseph Martinez, 21, died after being attacked by two other inmates.

It reportedly happened at the facility's general population maximum-security yard on the afternoon of Friday, Feb. 14.

Prison officials say Martinez was stabbed in the chest and back and was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Martinez was sent to Calipatria from Santa Barbara County in May 2019, to serve a 24-year-to-life sentence for attempted first-degree murder with enhancements for use of a firearm, street gang activity, and inflicting great bodily injury.

The two suspects have been identified as Robert A. Garcia, 24, and Brian Figueroa, 26. Both were convicted of murder charges and admitted from Los Angeles County.

Garcia and Figueroa were reportedly moved to a segregation unit while they are being investigated for the attack on Martinez.
