A large water main break was discovered in Santa Barbara Thursday morning.

The Santa Barbara City Fire Department says around 4:30 a.m., crews were called to the area and discovered a lot of water and debris on Ledera Street that appeared to be coming down the hillside from McKinley School.

“This was an active water leak with a large amount of water flowing. Upon further investigation, crew was able to hear water coming from under the McKinley campus which resulted in water flow down the hill to Ladera Street,” fire officials said in a press release.

Nearby condos were assessed and fire officials say some damage was found.

Water was turned off on Loma Alta Drive and Ladera Street while crews remain on scene.

The leak had been stopped by 6:37 a.m. but the exact location of the leak was not immediately known.

Fire officials say district officials are on school property looking for any damage there.

No other information was immediately available.
