San Luis Obispo County elected officials are calling on Governor Gavin Newsom to phase out extraction, production and burning of oil and gas in California.

They want Governor Newsom to enact a comprehensive Climate Emergency Plan.

This comes as the World Economic Forum is underway with climate crisis being a hot button topic. Also, the wildfires in Australia are a reminder that California's wildfire season is only months away.

Local leaders say Governor Newsom’s recent moratorium on new fracking wells and partial moratorium on steam-injection oil drilling is important but only a first step.

This Friday at noon San Luis Obispo County elected officials will hold a press conference on this topic outside the San Luis Obispo County Building on Monterey Street. It kicks off at noon. San Luis Obispo Mayor Heidi Harmon, Supervisor Adam Hill, and Morro Bay Mayor John Headding are a few officials that will be in attendance.

We will continue to follow this story and will have more tonight on KSBY at 5 and 6.
