Lompoc declares fiscal emergency, moves forward with sales tax measure

The Lompoc City Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to declare a fiscal emergency and place a 1% sales tax measure on the ballot.

The measure will be placed on the March 3, 2020 primary election ballot. Mayor Jenelle Osborne and Councilmember Victor Vega will reportedly write ballot arguments in favor of the measure.

The sales tax increase has been proposed as a way to help the City of Lompoc fill a multi-million dollar budget gap.

In June, the city council passed a budget that included $3 million in cuts, but city officials said a deficit remained and that budget issues could last for years.
