UPDATE (12:20 p.m): Santa Barbara police say the crash happened after a driver clipped some vehicles along Cliff Drive and then crashed into another, pushing it over 100 feet Thursday morning.
The driver was driving at a "high rate of speed," police say, adding the force of the impact sheered off the Range Rover's roof.
Police have not released information on those involved but a witness who heard the crash and then went outside around 1 a.m. said two women in possibly their early 20s were in the Range Rover.
The road remains closed in the area.

ORIGINAL STORY: An investigation is underway into what police are calling a “multi-vehicle major injury collision” in Santa Barbara early Thursday morning.
Few details are being released at this time, but according to a press release, the crash happened on the 1500 block of Cliff Drive and involved at least two vehicles that both had extensive damage.
The road between Salda del Sol to Santa Cruz is closed in both directions.
Police are asking people to avoid the area and Santa Barbara police say the department’s collision reconstruction team is on scene and the closure of the road and crash investigation is expected to last into the late afternoon hours.
