ORIGINAL STORY: An investigation is underway after a man who San Luis Obispo police say ran from a traffic stop over the weekend was found dead a short time later.

Officers say they attempted to stop a driver at around 1 a.m. Sunday who ran a red light at Santa Rosa and Peach streets, but the man got out and ran away before jumping over a locked gate near the San Luis Obispo County Courthouse.

Police say the officer did not chase the suspect due to not having access to the area.

A perimeter was set up but the suspect was not located.

A short time later, police say a call came in from someone who said they found a man bleeding near the courthouse along Santa Rosa Street.

Medics were dispatched to the scene, but the man was pronounced dead.

Officers say based on clothing the man was wearing, it was determined he was the same person that ran from the traffic stop.

Police are reportedly working with the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office to conduct a follow-up investigation and gain access to the area the man was last seen.

His cause of death is unknown at this time and his name has not been released.
