Man hit and killed by vehicle in downtown Santa Barbara

A driver hit and killed a man who was walking in downtown Santa Barbara.

Police say they responded to reports of a pedestrian being hit on the 600 block of East Cabrillo Street at around 5:15 p.m. Monday.

The crash happened near the Hilton hotel where police say a man described to be in his 60's walked into traffic and was immediately hit by a vehicle described to be a Ford Van.

Police say the driver of the van was traveling around 30 mph when the man was hit.

Fire and paramedics were first to arrive on scene, they worked with the victim who was eventually transported to Cottage hospital and later succumbed to his injuries.

Police say the driver of the van remained on scene and cooperated with police.

As of 9 p.m. police remain on scene investigating. The road is expected to remain closed until 10 p.m.

Police say they are investigating statements from multiple witnesses and they do not believe drugs or alcohol to be a contributing factor with the driver in the crash.
