UPDATE: Motorcyclist killed in Hwy 1 crash in Cambria

UPDATE (5:15 p.m.) - The California Highway Patrol says a motorcyclist died in the collision Friday in the southbound lanes of Highway 1 in Cambria south of Ardath Drive.

California Highway Patrol officers on scene say it appears the driver of a Jeep turned onto the shoulder of the road to make a u turn, turning into the path of the rider, causing the two vehicles to crash.

The rider was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead.

Officers say drugs or alcohol are not believed to be contributing factors.

Anyone who saw the crash is asked to call CHP.

As of 5:24 p.m., one lane of traffic on the two-lane highway remained closed.

Northbound traffic remained backed up to the Highway 46 interchange.

ORIGINAL STORY: A SIG Alert was issued for a portion of Highway 1 in Cambria following a crash Friday afternoon.

According to initial California Highway Patrol reports, the crash happened at about 3:22 p.m. on the highway near Ardath Drive and involved a vehicle and motorcycle.

Traffic was said to be backing up in both directions following the crash and CHP officers told KSBY News the motorcyclist suffered major injuries.
