A new space education program for students in the Lompoc Unified School District is ready for liftoff.
The 30th Space Wing held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday for the newest DoD STARBASE program at Vandenberg Air Force Base.
More than 30 5th graders will get to explore science, technology, engineering and math and experience careers in the space industry firsthand.
"We want the students to have better confidence in their math and science skills, writing skills, speaking skills, teamwork skills, which will transition them in the future so that they will become engineers, mathematicians, scientists,” said Tonya Troupspurlock, STARBASE program director.
Students from Manzanita school are currently taking part in the program.
Classes are held year-round on base.
