UPDATE: Santa Margarita man killed in crash near San Miguel

UPDATE (11:50 a.m.): The California Highway Patrol has identified the person killed in a crash Friday morning near San Miguel as Mykel Leo Romo, 28 of Santa Margarita.

CHP says the crash on Estrella Road east of Martingale Circle was reported to CHP shortly before 5 a.m. by another driver who was not on scene when officers arrived.

Romo was reportedly the passenger in a 2015 Toyota driven by a 23-year-old woman from San Miguel.

The driver told officers she fell asleep at the wheel and then crashed into an oak tree around 3:20 a.m..

She was wearing a seatbelt and sustained major injuries, according to CHP.

Investigators say Romo was not wearing a seatbelt and died at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation but officers say they determined the driver was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

ORIGINAL STORY: One person is dead and another suffered major injuries after a crash near San Miguel.

The crash involved a sedan and happened near Estrella Road and Martingale Circle. No other vehicles were involved.

Cal Fire Spokesman Adan Orozco said the man who died in the crash was a passenger in the vehicle. The woman who was driving suffered major injuries, according to Orozco.

The names of the two people in the vehicle have not been released.

Cal Fire San Luis Obispo responded to the scene early Friday morning.

According to a tweet from Cal Fire, one of the victims required extrication from the vehicle.

Drugs and alcohol are not considered factors in the crash. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
