Paso Robles police are warning people to not use drive-up drop-off boxes at the local post office following several stolen check reports.

Police say they have taken 15 reports over the last month regarding checks being stolen that were mailed at the drive-up boxes at the post office, located at 800 6th Street.

“The stolen checks have all been washed, altered, and deposited electronically into someone’s account, for amounts far greater than the original amount,” police said in a Facebook post, adding that the total loss to date is $30,000.

Police say they are working with the post office to fix the problem and are investigating every case.

People are encouraged to go inside the post office to mail letters containing checks or to not mail checks at all.
