Officers with the Paso Robles Police Department arrested a person on suspicion of starting a fire at Smart & Final early Thursday morning.

According to a news release from Paso Robles Fire and Emergency Services, fire crews responded to the Smart & Final on the 2100 block of Spring Street at 5:37 a.m. for a reported miscellaneous debris fire.

Upon arrival, firefighters saw light smoke coming from smoldering debris in front of the store's entrance as Paso Robles police officers detained a person, according to the release.

After a Smart & Final employee used a fire extinguisher to fight the fire, Paso Robles firefighters extinguished the rest of the blaze, authorities said.

Officials say fire crews nor civilians reported any injuries.

After firefighters cleaned up the remaining fire debris, Smart & Final was able to open for business, said the release.

The fire and emergency services department says the person who police say is believed to have started the fire was arrested and booked into jail on suspicion of arson.

Fire crews say one fire engine, a battalion chief and five police officers responded to the incident.
