Paso Robles police used a taser on a driver who took off after a car crash.

Just after 11 Tuesday morning, police were dispatched to a vehicle collision on Paso Robles Street near the northbound 101 off-ramp.

Dispatchers were told the driver exited his vehicle and was running away from the collision.

An officer arrived and the police department says the suspect was in the middle of Paso Robles Street yelling.

Police say the suspect, later identified as 32-year-old, Darren Santagelo of Atascadero became violent toward the officer and began kicking and punching him.

The officer used his taser and with the help of other officers, they got Santagelo into custody.

Santagelo was taken to the hospital for injuries from the vehicle collision.

The police department says Santagelo was suspected to be under the influence of a controlled substance at the time of the incident.

Officers add his vehicle collided with a parked vehicle and he then ran away. He began yelling at other vehicles passing and tried to get into other vehicles in the area as well.

He was booked into jail for driving under the influence, fleeing the scene of a traffic collision, and felony assault on a police officer.
