A man was airlifted with a severe head injury after officials believe he was hit by a car in Buellton.
Officials with the Santa Barbara County Fire Department say they were dispatched to the intersection of Highway 246 and Avenue of the Flags around 5:45 p.m.
When crews arrived on scene, they found a man just west of the intersection who appeared to have been hit by a car, but there was no car at the scene.
Santa Barbara County fire officials believe the man is a victim of a hit and run.
According to authorities, bystanders found the man, believed to be a transient, in the roadway with a significant head injury.
Paramedics gave the pedestrian medical attention on scene before transporting him to the hospital via helicopter.
Emergency crews closed down the intersection to land Cal Star 7 and airlift the man to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.
