Santa Barbara Police arrested a man for assault with intent to commit rape in the area of La Cumbre Plaza Mall.

Police and firefighters responded to reports of an assault at around 6 p.m. Tuesday at a store within the La Cumbre Plaza Mall.

After an investigation, police say Marshal Anthony Coates, 50, behaved erratically outside the store then entered the business with an employee who was by themselves.

A report from the victim states they had sensed danger and tried to retreat, however Coates advanced towards them and an unprovoked violent assault ensued.

The victim reportedly was able to exit the store and seek help from an adjoining business, who then called 911.

Witnesses provided a description of Coates, who police say is 6'3" and weights 250 pounds, and he was later taken into custody.

Police say the victim and Coates had no prior relationship.

Through additional witness interviews and background investigation, detectives concluded that the suspect entered the store not only to assault the victim, but with the intent to commit a sexual assault.

Coates is facing multiple felony charges and is being held without the opportunity for bail.
