UPDATE (7:30 a.m.) – Santa Maria police say a shooting Friday in Santa Maria happened at about 6 a.m. while a robbery was taking place.

Police say the incident took place around a vehicle at an apartment complex on the 1700 block of N. Broadway.

Lt. Russ Mengel described the crime as “brazen and unusual,” considering the shooting happened on such a busy street and close to the roadway.

The victim, who police say was conscious when they arrived and told officers the suspect demanded money and valuables, was reportedly taken to the hospital with “significant” injuries after being shot in the chest.

Police remained on scene as of 7:30 a.m. talking with people in the area and seeing if any surveillance cameras may have captured what happened.

Police say they are still looking for the alleged robber.

KSBY has a crew at the scene and will have updates as they become available.
