UPDATE (11:45 p.m.) - The Santa Maria Police Detective Bureau is investigating this crime and asking for the public's help.
Police said upon arrival to the report of shots heard in the area, they found an adult man with a fatal gunshot wound in the 800 block of West Donovan Road. Any unknown suspect(s) fled before officers got to the scene.

Police say the shooting took place in the 800 block of West Donovan Road shortly before 4:30 p.m.
Police say officers have located a victim and are investigating a crime scene.
The roadway is expected to be closed for the next few hours and the public is being asked to avoid the area.
