You may see smoke and flames near Montaña de Oro and San Simeon this week.

California State Parks, with assistance from CAL FIRE and the Air Pollution Control District, will conduct prescribed burns at Montaña de Oro and Hearst S. San Simeon State Parks.

Burning is expected to happen Monday, December 16th and Friday, December 20th from about 7 a.m. to about 5 p.m.

About 100 acres of grassland will be burned at the Molinari parcel which is bordered by Highway 1, Van Gordon Creek Rd. and San Simeon Creek Rd.

This also includes burn piles near the pine forest east of Highway 1, south of San Simeon Creek campground and in Montaña de Oro State Park near Camp KEEP and the environmental camp facilities.

According to CA State Parks, the prescribed burn is meant to reduce fuel loads associated with pine pitch canker, drought and dead trees.

The "Molinari" burn helps crews prepare for forest restoration and planting of Monterey pine seedlings according to a press release.
