Members of the Rotary Club of Pismo Beach-Five Cities are collecting donations for the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office Sewing Program throughout the month of July.

The sewing program gives prison inmates fabric to create clothing items and blankets for community members who are homeless, according to club members.

The rotary club is accepting yarn and fabric until July 31, said Margie Salame, co-secretary of the Rotary Club of Pismo Beach-Five Cities.

"Our program is all about doing good for other people," said Salame. "There's so much satisfaction in helping improve the lives of others."

According to club members, inmates will use the material to knit hats, scarves, afghans and sew quilts, which will then be donated to El Camino Homeless Organization (ECHO) and Community Action Team made up of patrol deputies, probation officers and licensed psychiatric technicians who assist community members in need.

Salame said the club has collected at least seven bags of yarn and thread so far.

To donate materials to the rotary club for the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office Sewing Program, community members can email Salame at margiesalame@gmail.com or visit the event's Facebook page.
