The San Luis Obispo Regional Transit Authority is building a new bus operations and maintenance facility near Elks Lane and Prado Road in San Luis Obispo.

The new facility is meant to allow RTA to add new buses to its system that are electric or battery-run.

Construction is expected to last about 18 months and cost $17 million.

Federal and state funds as well as a grant from the San Luis Obispo Air Quality Management District will pay for the project.

"This facility will serve as a home base and a place for those vehicles to charge throughout the day and overnight, whenever they're at the facility and we've also provided the planning infrastructure so that the RTA can implement a great deal of solar on the site to offset their power demands," said William Todd, Senior Associate with Stantec Architecture.

Construction is set to begin in the next week at the 253 Elks Lane location.
