A San Diego man was arrested after witnesses say he assaulted an elderly woman in Morro Bay over the weekend, police say.

On February 15, Morro Bay Police say they responded to reports of a disturbance at the Morro Rock parking lot on Coleman Dr. at around 1 p.m.

When officers arrived on scene, witnesses reported that 39-year-old Brian Robert Sprinkle of La Jolla, California had assaulted an elderly woman and knocked her to the ground.

Officials said Sprinkle was participating in a surf competition when he exited the water and assaulted the woman without provocation.

According to authorities, numerous people witnessed the attack and went to help the victim.

Officials said the woman was treated by first responders for moderate injuries.

Sprinkle was booked in the San Luis Obispo County Jail on felony charges of elder abuse and battery, according to Morro Bay Police.

Officers said they also found a firearm with Sprinkle's property and seized it.

It is believed the suspect was under the influence of marijuana and hallucinogenic drugs, police said.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Morro Bay Police Department at (805) 772-6225.
