The Santa Barbara County Fire Department's live scent search dog, Riley, is retiring.

Riley was paired with Capt. Eric Gray in October of 2009 and after seven months of training, the two passed their FEMA Certification.

Since then, the pair have responded to incidents all over the world, searching for victims of disasters in the Japan earthquake and tsunami in 2011, the Nepal earthquake in 2015, and the aftermath of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico in 2017.

Their last high-profile deployment was local, responding to the Montecito debris flow on January 9, 2018.

The fire department says Riley is now 11-years-old and ready to slow down a bit. He'll be enjoying life as a family pet in the Gray home.
