The Santa Maria High School Race Team is about to make history as the first high school team competing in a National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) drag race this weekend.
The Saint's 1968 Chevrolet Camaro will compete in the Super Street Class/10.90 Index Class at the Auto Club Raceway in Pomona.
In November, the team won the 35-car D/Gas Class elimination during the American Nostalgia Racing Association's event at the Auto Club Famoso Raceway in Bakersfield.
It was the team's first win since the program started in 2007.
The student race team includes Brayan Flores, John Graack, Blake Almaguer, Hazel Perez, Alizé Torres, Jose Pizano, Gabriel Chavez, Heri Larios, and Alberto Solis.
Adult driver Greg Dreher will handle the Camaro during the race this weekend.
