Santa Barbara School Board Member Laura Capps is officially announcing her candidacy to run for County Supervisor in Santa Barbara County.
She made the announcement during a community event at the Santa Barbara Mission Rose Garden among her friends and family Tuesday afternoon. Capps was introduced by Reverend Anne Howard before making a speech about her campaign.
Capps is currently serving the community as the Vice President of the Santa Barbara Unified School Board and was previously president of the Community Environmental Council. She also volunteered on the board of directors of the Parenthood Action Fund and Interfaith Initiative.
She got her start in government working as a White House Aide to Senior Advisor George Stephanopoulos and then as a speechwriter to Former President Bill Clinton. Capps continued her work in politics when she became Senator Ted Kennedy’s Communications Director in the U.S. Senate and later the senior aide to John Kerry during his 2004 presidential campaign.
Capps is the daughter of Lois Capps and the late Walter Capps who both represented the Central Coast in the House of Representatives.
She is expected to run against Das Williams, who is the current County Supervisor for District 1 in Santa Barbara County.
Other County Supervisors include Gregg Hart, Joan Hartmann, Peter Adam and Steve Lavagnino.
