A Santa Maria school was placed on lockdown Monday morning while a search for a stolen vehicle suspect was underway.

The California Highway Patrol says they received a report of a stolen vehicle in the Los Alamos area and officers spotted the vehicle at around 8:35 a.m. on Clark Avenue in the Orcutt area.

A pursuit began, ending in the area of the 500 block of E. Cypress near St. Mary’s of the Assumption School, which prompted the precautionary lockdown.

Officers say the driver of the stolen vehicle ran off and had not been found as of 10:25 a.m.

A perimeter has been set up and police K-9s are being brought in to assist with the search.

No other information was immediately available.
