Serve Santa Maria is back to volunteering around the community.

Several volunteers came out to Taylor Elementary School in Santa Maria Saturday morning and painted the United States map on the school playground.

Pastor Carl Nielsen, the organizer of Serve Santa Maria, said volunteers also painted the foursquare and tetherball courts. Volunteers had 5-gallon buckets of paint to cover those larger areas.

This project was originally scheduled to be completed in April but had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to organizers.

Jillian Jorde, the assistant principal of Taylor Elementary School, said she was happy to see community members serving together.

"I'm excited to have a sense of normalcy and to see our teenage youth come out and work together for this project, and as a parent, I'm just excited to see the ways that our students come together for our schools," said Jorde.

After painting at the school, other Serve Santa Maria volunteers headed to the Santa Maria Foursquare Church to remove weeds and place bark around the landscape.
