A building inspector for the City of San Luis Obispo has started serving time for assaulting two people at an Avila Beach bar.

According to a city official, Chris Olcott surrendered to the Seal Beach Detention Center, a pay-to-stay jail facility in Southern California, on August 30.

At that time, he was reportedly placed on unpaid leave. He had been on paid leave since April.

The assault occurred at Mr. Rick's in 2016.

The city said it did not know the details of the case until video of the incident surfaced online this spring, prompting officials to place Olcott on leave amid a personnel investigation.

Surveillance video of the incident shows Olcott elbowing a woman in the face and punching a man repeatedly.

Olcott went to trial, but the jury could not unanimously agree on a verdict.

In February, he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor assault charge to avoid another jury trial.

He was sentenced to 60 days in jail starting no later than September 6.

A restitution hearing in the case is scheduled for December.

The city says it expects to include its personnel investigation in mid-September.
