The SLO CAL Open at Morro Rock Beach wrapped up its final day of qualifying championships on Sunday afternoon.

The event kicked off on Feb. 27, with surfers from all over the world traveling to the Central Coast to participate in the four-day competition.

According to the men's competition website, 17-year-old Taro Watanabe from Malibu, Calif., won the men's qualifying series.

Twenty-year-old Izzi Gomez from San Clemente, Calif., claimed her first-ever victory during her heat in the women's qualifying series, according to the women's competition website.

Gomez said she has been preparing for months for this competition.

"I just surf because I love surfing and it's my passion," said Gomez. "I couldn't imagine not surfing. There's definitely been times where I've taken breaks just because I've been burnt out from competitions and stuff, but it's the love of my life."

Gomez said her next surf competition is in Barbados. After, she said she hopes to qualify to surf in the 2020 Summer Olympics.
