The San Luis Obispo City Council has approved a one-year pilot program to designate loading areas for ride shares in Downtown SLO.

Uber and Lyft vehicles will be able to drop off and pick up passengers in designated areas on Higuera Street between Garden and Broad streets and on Chorro Street in front of Luna Red.

The program is designed to address nightlife safety concerns on Higuera between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m.

The issue came up a year ago after rideshare drivers expressed concern about safety during those high-demand hours.

The program starts October 1.
