San Luis Obispo is moving toward zero emission transit buses.

The City Council unanimously approved the purchase of two of the buses at Tuesday night’s meeting.

The electric buses will replace two of the city's oldest diesel-powered buses.

They will cost about $1.7 million and be paid for mostly by state and federal grant funding.

The City says the new buses have a lower operational cost than diesel buses and do not produce greenhouse gases.

SLO Transit operates 10 buses along eight routes.

Service runs Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. and weekends from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
