The San Luis Obispo City Council has invoked an emergency Safety Enhancement Zone, which will be in effect until stay-at-home orders are lifted.

A Safety Enhancement Zone is typically put into practice around holidays such as Halloween and St. Patrick's Day when college students are likely to hold parties.

It is being invoked now in hopes of preventing large gatherings during measures being taken to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

During a Safety Enhancement Zone period, fines are doubled for violations including noise, unruly gatherings, public urination, and having an open container. According to the San Luis Obispo Police Department, the first violation for noise and unruly gathering will be $700.

Police are encouraging neighbors to report large or loud parties by calling (805) 781-7312.
