The San Luis Obispo City Council will consider an urgency ordinance Tuesday aimed at protecting local renters.
The Tenant Protection Act of 2019, or AB 1482, caps annual rent increases and requires landlords to show just cause before evicting a tenant in good standing. It goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2020.
The city's proposed ordinance would carry the same rent and eviction provisions as the state law but would go into effect immediately, thus preventing potentially significant year-end rent increases and eviction notices that some renters have reported experiencing.
Several California cities have recently passed similar emergency measures to protect renters during the gap period before the state law goes into effect.
That includes Grover Beach, which passed an emergency ordinance last week after the city council was contacted by a resident who said he received an eviction notice from his landlord.
The San Luis Obispo City Council will hold a special meeting on the matter at 6 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall.
Approximately 65 percent of San Luis Obispo residents are renters.
