The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office is offering the general public a promo code to purchase a SmartWater CSI kit at a reduced price.
The sheriff's office demonstrated the SmartWater system at a press conference on Tuesday, announcing it as the county's newest tool to fight the theft of agricultural equipment in rural areas.
SmartWater is a liquid that can be applied to any item and traced back to the owner through a unique barcode.
The sheriff's office purchased 450 kits to hand out to farmers and ranchers in the county for free.
However, sheriff's officials say they've received so many calls inquiring whether the system is available to the general public, they've made a special arrangement with the company to offer local residents a deal on the kits.
